Welcome to the ice caves in Werfen! The gigantic system of caves in the mountains of the Tennengebirge is 42 kilometres long and was detected by explorers at the beginning of the last century. From this moment on, thousands of visitors have climbed up to the caves near Salzburg every year. The first visitors had to climb up a very precipitous and exhausting path to the caves – today a cable car takes them right to the entrance. Even the ride with the cable car is very impressive. Within a few minutes Austria’s steepest cable car takes you from an altitude of 1076 metres to 1586 metres above sea level. During the ride you can enjoy breathtaking views over the Salzach river valley and the mountain scenery of the Alps.
In the giant ice caves in Werfen you can admire the mighty ice sculptures, which were formed by mother earth herself. Because of very cold temperatures, even in summer, good shoes and warm clothes are recommended. Don’t forget your cap and gloves. At the entrance to the ice cave you will get a pit lamp. During the visit you will cover an altitude difference of 134 metres – which is about the same as climbing the steps to the top of a tower block.
