Mozart in Salzburg
You will find out lots of interesting information about the most famous inhabitant of Salzburg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in the museum at his birthplace in the Getreidegasse, as well as at his residence on the Makartplatz. Definitely worth tasting are of course the Salzburger Mozartkugeln – small and sweet chocolate balls with nougat and almond paste. A very special experience is the Mozart Dinner Concert in the cellar of the monastery of St. Peter. Musicians, dressed like Mozart, perform his music while you eat different courses of food that are based on traditional recipes from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Every year in January, around Mozart’s birthday, the Mozart week takes place in Salzburg. The international foundation Mozarteum puts on operas, orchestra and solo concerts in this week. Mozart interpreters such as Nicolaus Harnoncourt, Andràs Schiff and Marc Minkowski, orchestras like the Vienna Philharmonic, the musicians du Louvre or the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg and ensembles like the Hagen Quartett, the Artemis Quartett and many other soloists maintain the Salzburg Festival’s excellent reputation. This classical festival was founded in 1956 and its concerts take place in the large hall of the Mozarteum, the house of Mozart, the large Festspielhaus and in the solitaire of the Mozarteum University.
