The richness of the past – conserved in one building
Welcome to the glory of the princedom of Salzburg. The residence is located directly next to Salzburg Cathedral and was the representation hall of the mighty Archbishops of Salzburg. The magnificent rooms give a good impression of the secular and clerical might of the ruling Archbishops. Today they testify to 200 years of architectural style and bear witness to the former richness of the city. The Salzburg residence combines Renaissance, Baroque and Classical elements in a harmonious way. True jewels like beautiful frescos, stickeries and stuccos are among the well preserved masterworks. The residence gallery is located on the third floor and features the federal state’s painting collection. Fans of art can find real treasures here: top-class European paintings from the 16th to the 19th century in a very harmonious ambiance.
The main focus of the collection is on paintings from the Netherlands from the 17th century, Italian, French and Austrian baroque paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and Austrian paintings from the 19th century.
