Salzburg’s historic centre
A short walk through the historic centre of Salzburg
The Altstadthotel Wolf-Dietrich is located directly in the centre of Salzburg. This enables you to explore the city within a short and relaxing walk. Linzer Gasse, one of the oldest and best-known streets in Salzburg, is only a few steps away from the hotel. It is also worthwhile visiting the church of St. Sebastian with its small cemetery and Stations of the Cross. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s father, Leopold Mozart, his mother, Constanze Mozart, and the famous doctor Paracelsus are buried in this cemetery. Visitors who want to enjoy a breathtaking view over the city of Salzburg should head to the top of the Kapuzinerberg Mountain right next to the Linzer Gasse. Although the path is quite steep, the view is fantastic. Those who don’t like the effort involved in climbing up the mountain can take a comfortable seat on the roof terrace at Hotel Stein. The Makartplatz with Mozart’s residence and its interesting museum is located parallel to the Linzer Gasse. Here you can enjoy a short break at the Café Classic. Before you walk on the other side of the Salzach River you should definitely visit the Mirabell garden, which is located right opposite Mozart’s residence. In springtime the beautiful garden from the 17th century is full of colourful plants. Enjoy a walk through the old town of Salzburg.
While you are walking along the Makartsteg to the other side of the river Salzach you can enjoy fantastic views of the Salzburg skyline with the dome of the Salzburg Cathedral and the Hohensalzburg fortress. On the left bank of the river the Getreidegasse with its world-famous wrought-iron guild signs is already waiting for you. You can stroll and shop in Salzburg’s best-known shopping street to your hearts’ content. Numerous traditional cafés serve delicious Austrian desserts here. The abbey of St. Peter with its cemetery is also worth a visit, as is an inspection of the catacombs. The glorious Salzburg Cathedral is now only a few steps away. The historic centre of Salzburg is small enough to walk across within a short time. The Hohensalzburg fortress reigns supreme above the city, and you can reach it after a 10-minute steep walk or with the castle cable car. During the guided tour in the medieval castle you will learn many interesting things about the Prince Archbishops and the history of Salzburg. The breathtaking view over the city centre of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains and valleys will inspire you.
